Fireworks on the border

Big Boom Fireworks is just off Junction 20, right on the border in Northern Ireland. 649 fireworks from five brands, free parking at the door, and minutes from Newry whichever direction you approach from. We are a Northern Ireland retailer, so Northern Ireland licensing rules apply to everything we sell.

Easy to reach, hard to miss

The border country around Newry is one of the best-connected corners of the island. The main Belfast–Dublin road runs straight through it, and Junction 20 puts us within a couple of minutes of the carriageway. You do not have to pick your way through a town centre or find a multi-storey — you come off the junction, you park at our door, and you walk into a showroom rather than a shed.

That matters more than it sounds when you are buying fireworks. Cartons are bulky and heavy, particularly crates and compound cakes. Being able to load straight into the boot, a few steps from where you paid, is the difference between a quick errand and a genuine hassle.

It also means you can come and look before you commit. Plenty of our customers call in once to walk the floor and get a feel for what things actually cost, build a shot list on this site that evening, then collect the following week. There is no pressure to buy on the first visit.

Which rules apply on the border?

We are a Northern Ireland shop, and NI law governs what we sell

Being close to the border changes how long it takes you to reach us. It does not change the law. Every sale we make is a Northern Ireland sale: over-18s only, photo ID checked, and a Department of Justice licence required for all the categories that need one.

If you are travelling from the Republic, it is worth knowing that Irish law is stricter again. In the Republic it is an offence to possess most fireworks without a licence from the Department of Justice there, and that applies regardless of where the fireworks were bought. Anyone planning to fire a display south of the border needs to sort their position under Irish law first — we can’t do that for you, and we won’t pretend the question goes away because the shop is handy.

What we can do is be completely straight with you about what you are buying, which category each firework falls into, and what paperwork it needs on our side. Ask us. We would far rather have a five-minute conversation at the counter than sell you something you can’t legally use.
